Greetings Reuse Fans,
I was recently listening to an episode of the podcast “Make Me Smart with Kai and Molly” produced by Marketplace and one of the hosts, Kai Ryssdal, quoted a Yelp study that stated that 60% of America’s small businesses are closed permanently. This is a devastating number. The Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small retail business as generating under $6 million of annual revenue. While CJ is a nonprofit, our retail operation lands well within the small business category. This year, of course, we will be even smaller. We project our 2020 sales will be around what we achieved in 2012 or 2013!
All of this is a long lead in (apologies to those who suffer through my meetings who know I do these) to my saying a heartfelt thank you to all of our shoppers and donors who have continued to support CJ through this difficult, uncertain period. CJ is on solid footing to finish out the year. Our long-time employees have been incredible and the addition of new faces to our staff brings a much valued infusion of energy to our mission.
CJ will continue to work to support small businesses in Pittsburgh. Check our calendar to see the new pop up shops coming and some ways we are trying to keep the spirit of our Steel City Big Pour alive with opportunities for takeout food, beverages and crafts at CJ over the coming months.
